Mister Glicker

I’m a real fan of Costume Designers and do strongly believe they don’t get often the recognition they deserve in the public eye. Perhaps it’s because my mother was one! It is slowly changing thought… While researching about the costume design of the latest Gus Van Sant movie Restless, I’ve found great material to share with you folks, that is to show I’m surely not the only one curious about this art.
First off, this is not my favorite film from Van Sant, and I found it surprisingly uneven and poorly acted sometimes – something I had never experimented with his filmography before. But I still strongly suggest seeing it, for the beautiful settings, the friendly ghost and the amazing art direction.

Mister Glicker is the one responsible for the stunning costumes. This guy studied Industrial Design at the Rhode Island Design School before making the big switch to Costume Design. He was nominated for an oscar for the costumes of Milk, Gus Van Sant’s biopic of the iconic gay-rights activist Harvey Milk and designed costumes for Up In The Air and Thank You For Smoking.
Mister Glicker’s design for Restless is very impressive. The two main characters, Annabel and Enoch, are like kids with old souls, dressing up in vintage frocks inspired by the 20′s, 30′s and 60′s. It really sets the tone for the movie and give us hints about their personalities.

MTV Style did a great interview with Danny Glicker about Restless, you should read it! Mister Glicker mentioned how he designed and tailored most of the outfits worn by Mia Wasikowska while completing the look with vintage finds from all over the country. Hot stuff!
Also Elle.com spoke with the man when he was nominated for an Oscar for Milk back in 2009, you can read it here.
Restless is currently in theater.
